The drugs used in clotting and bleeding disorders can be divided into 2 major catagories:
- Drugs used to decrease clotting or it can dissolve clots already present in patients who are at risk for vascular occlusion
- Drugs used to increase clotting in patients with clotting deficiencies ( Blood unable to clot at all ).
The first group, the anticlotting drugs, includes some of the most commonly used drugs in the India. Anticlotting drugs are used for both treatment and prevention of myocardial infarction and other acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, ischemic stroke, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
The anticlotting group of drugs, the anticoagulant and thrombolytic drugs are effective in treatment of both venous ( clotting within veins ) and arterial thrombosis ( Clot that develops within artery )
